Winners and Also-Ran

I think that my poems
are like racehorses;
some are winners,
others are “also-ran”.`
 
I prepare them all
as best as I can.
A few clear the hurdles
but many do fall.
 
In my mind, each one
is a thoroughbred
yet I am very doubtful
that any will be read.
 
There is, of course,
the occasional horse
that is not too smart
and will refuse to start.
 
Critics say that perhaps
I'm not a good trainer
and to give it all up
seems to be a no-brainer.

That's a very good comparison Luigi - horses and poems, but please ignore the final verse and keep on writing. In case you produce no further runners this year, I hope you have a very happy new year and look forward to many more of your poems in 2025!
