Wishing

My Christmas wish
when I was a kid
was to meet Santa Claus
face to face
but I never did
though I found traces
that he had come.
He'd sipped the sherry
but had left some;
maybe he didn't want
to become too merry
and lose control;
he was in charge
of a sleigh, after all.

I grew up,
was now a top dog
not a pup
but I still expressed
a Yuletide wish.
My desire this time
was to put an end
to all crime
and it was my hope
that it could be soon
but it didn't happen:
you would think
I'd asked for the moon.

Undaunted, I continued
in my annual task
and thought that I might
be granted my wish
because I would ask
the whole world
to lay down their arms
and give up the fight.
Fat chance!
All were determined
to maintain their stance
and were wont to cry:
A tooth for a tooth
and an eye for an eye.

This year, once again
I will try to ensure
that my wish will become
a realised ambition.
I want everyone to shun
avarice and greed,
to give a helping hand
to the people in need.
To give renewed hope,
not to give up in despair,
stand back and mope
but to think and reflect
on how to solve problems
like the greenhouse effect.
