I looked back as I mounted the curve by the lake and saw that she'd sat on the bench, and was writing a note to someone. The colours on the notelet were vivid. My mother long ago, had pointed out how visible they were, pretty envolopes with pictures of this and that. Too easy to find and pull out.... she'd said.
Now we'd all think her paranoid, only I'd seen the metalic blue car with the two girls talking earnestly to the postie about how close their Mother's name was to someone else in the same street. "So can we have a quick look at the post please?"
The same old, the same old... mind you, not for months now.
She was still writing when I came back round to the bench. "Hi again!" she said brightly. "How many laps have you done?"
"That was the sixth and my last for today," I puffed, the wet weather had been putting me off doing it. "Unfortunately to keep my figure, it's necessary."
She laughed softly, "I just go swimming."
"Good idea," I replied feeling my legs twinge. "I ought too!"
"Has there been anymore unpleasantness?"
Surprisingly she shook her head, "They are still nosy, they think I'm due for something, which I've never had. If I am they want it. They keep on trying to mislead me into saying its other people. The main ones seem to be an Irish family, quite mad. Who say they know me from before..."
"There were so many of them..." I offered, I'd not known the reasoning behind it all, except for the strange pychic abilities they all used.
"Seem to think I'm a source, whatever that is," she paused, "I used to have a special arrangement with someone, however he's gone. I don't believe I'll offer it again. There is no-one like him left now."
"What do they want?"
"Anything that's mine apparently. Even if I go shopping they follow me, huge ladies all arguing if I should have this or that in Bestgo's. Can she afford it? etc.
Bestgo staff got them off last time. It's a bit like having ticks!"
"What were they like?" I had visions of Sharon and me following her.
"One was brown haired and big both ways, the other was thin, fairly tall blonde, with an old face. Like an old prositute. Charming attitude as sharp as vinegar. I think she works the charity shop circuit, used to be the one declaring herself a secret agent... If I say anything nasty about them, then I've lost it... why I don't know."
It sounded like Sharon and one of the tripod's, I thought most of them were off the game. "Did you hear their names? It might be the mother of the.. She's not as old as she looks. Used up I suppose.".
"No," she said quietly, "I was just grateful that they were gone. She made an odd claim, about the scots PM sending her."
I thought about that, was she mad?
"Will you send the letter?" It irked me not to know who she was sending it too. She had had trouble wording it, there were about six crunched up bits of paper in her lap.
"Not today," she said hesitantly, "I can't find the right words. They won't want someone my age any road."
"You have surivived a really unpleasant experience," I pointed out calmly, wishing I hadn't been a part of it. "And you still have a good working brain."
"Yeah," she agreed, "And now I am awake about things I wouldn't have believed in before, and wish I didn't know now."

The following morning I went down to Phyliss's shop to find her enscounced behind the counter checking the books.
"Hi!" she said flicking the book closed, "Want a cuppa?"
"Yes please," I was covered in rain-drops. April was performing real weather. "I'll just go towel dry myself."
Phyliss and her were laughing when I got back.
"What's up?" I asked curiously. I hoped it wasn't behind my back stuff. They hadn't ganged up on me. Never under-estimate the power of women my old Ma had said. Especially when they've done someone a wrong. Or thieved, no way to knock a knicker pincher except with the truth and somone who can establish it..
"I met the secret agent again, in the Arthrickity shop, (25/04) she was yelling at someone."
"Tell her why!" said Phyliss. "I can't get enough of this story. They've had it coming."
"Some customers asked her to apologise to me for what they had done."
"Did she?"
"No, she just screamed and shouted that they had all agreed that I wasn't good enough. Don't you think you can get out of it now she said to them." She half smiled, "It was embarrissing, however I'm glad to see some of the women are fed up of stealing and have got their knives put away. I'd been to a Bible Society meeting, my mind was half occupied with what I'd heard there."
"Perhaps now you could have her done?" Phyliss said quietly.
"Not sure if I could get the proof for it all." she said worriedly, "The last place I want to end up again is the mental hospital. After that the post was even checked
