"Hang on, Leggings!" yelled Phyliss, caught in the act of not quite finished her thoughts, "How far away were you when you heard them talking at that woman?"
I stopped to consider, "I have to meet Paul," I moaned aloud, I had been quite some distance away, top of the street by the Chippee, the action had taken place past the church in the center, perhaps 250 yards away.
"250 yards?" I ventured not being metric, we ladies of a certain age arn't. Phyliss cracked up,
"I wouldn't be able to hear at that distance. Was it loud?"
"No one else seemed to notice," I mumbled, "She did though!" The more I thought on it, the more mean I felt. I should have said something, I should have gone down there."
"I'm having a late lunch," she replied slowly, "Go meet Paul, give him a hug from me. I'll call you, I want you to meet someone."
I shot out of the door and straight into Paul, "I was coming to find you," he said.
He was medium tall and beautiful, bent slightly over me. His large hands steadied me.
i would have fallen over without him.
"My saviour," I said joking, I'd forgotten he was a Christian, I was caught in the moment. He backed away, his face a mask of disapointment and disaproval.
"I'd really rather you didn't say that," he opinioned. "i'll take all over names instead!"
I hugged him, "That's from Phyliss! Mine comes later!"
We walked down the street hand in hand, the sunshine tugged at my heart, the whole world had suddenly bloomed. The air was fresh, clean and exciting and full of love. I was literally walking on air. We stopped to get an icecream, and sat by the river's edge to eat them. We talked and forgot the time. Looked into each other's eyes, as if by that, we could hold each other for all time. It didn't last, the mobile rang. He let go my eyes, let go my hand, and stood up.
"Work," he said, "I wish we did the same hours." He kissed my cheek, and walked away. My heart broke with each step. He hadn't said he was coming back.
The mobile went again, it was Phyliss, "I'm coming out," she said quietly, "Can you meet me at the bus station?"
"Sure, where are we going?"
"I'll tell you then." she said, "You've got to know how bad it can get. And soon, or there's no way out for you."
"See you there," I told her confidently, I wasn't sure enough that it was all hookey, there was something weird going on, and I wanted to knows what. I was too confident, I bumped straight into Sharon.
"Hiya," she shouted, "There's a shout going on."
"A Shout?" i asked.
"Yes, we've nearly got her, the game's good, she's losing contracts, the girls have been goig at her clients all day, just a bit here and there. So they all know what we say."
"What do we say?" I asked her quietly remembering what Phyliss had said.
Sharon went all pink, and smiled, "We say what we've heard about her, just little bits that show folk how she isn't quite all there. How ill she's. Mentally."
"Right, I'll know what to say now," I said softly and politely.
The man with her smiled too, "I'm Brian, nice to meet you."
I held out a hand, "Me too. Any friend of Sharon's."
He nodded, "Likewise, Sharon, dear I'm off to start the food selection, the girls have got her preferences all sorted out. It's no trouble to add something to the packets."
"Tea bags are good," Sharon said happily, "Always on special offer too! She likes them cheap!"
"Have to catch a bus!" I said and waved as I walked away. No more tea bags on special for me. I'd miss Phyliss and her mysterious trip out if I didn't hurry.
