Kitty was quite positive the next time I met her, she was being experimental, wearing the stock from work. A mid blue and silver kimono over soft navy draping trousers.
"Rich stuff," I commented admiring the print. I had seen it. It had hung for months, totally unnoticed.
"Yes," she said unbothered, "She said I should, wear it, I mean, says its good for business.
"I think that's true," I agreed. I sat down by the lake, I had completed my laps.
She now did the weekends, and I did weekdays and events. Somehow it all worked. I hadn't seen her for ages, she looked much better than she did.
"I moved," she said simply, "Thought I'd tell you, just a flat now. I got fed up of the slum clearance clap."
"I hear they do that alot, sometimes carry folk out on their beds! Sometimes drop them outside of the county with nothing on their backs, and nought in their pockets. Bully boys!"
"And girls," she replied softly, taking in my indignation. "Sometimes you hear its the sporty types in the property market. Trying to mark out a victim, to put them away, and take their homes and anything else they can get their hands on. Course they validate it by saying they are supporting something charitable, which makes it ok. Some of them were into saying they were related to me. And the police said that was legal!"
"The police?"
"I asked them to stop them, and they told me it wasn't a crime, and they couldn't do anything about it... I often wonder what they could have claimed doing that.e If you can't stop them, and they steal your post etc... well it doesn't bear thinking over."
"I've even heard that the Nurses get a bonus for finding new residents for the Dementia homes..."
"That's a bit far fetched." I said.
"I don't know. It's kinda a mystery here who works with who. If they say it's a game on the radio, no one can resist the lure of joining in."
"Well if you're right, it fits in with the Insurance scam too. A kind of take all situation..." My voice tailed off taking it in. What a grim scam to play on folk approaching their sixties. Do you think they knew you earlier in life?"
"Sometimes I think I do. I was fostered, and before that I was at a school for psychic and bright children. Only they weren't awfully bright. And something horrid was happening to children in the cellars. I left, I left the experiment to be the control. I begged. I detested the others." Kitty stopped. Her face red.
"Sounds like the village of the dammed." It was mind boggling. "Did you all have blonde hair?"
"Mine went white in an hour. I was told. My foster mum used to dye it."
"Do you really think the slum clearance is a property scam?"
"I rented. So what they did to me, was either practise or just evil. I have to go to work." she said, "Didn't they ever tell you anything at the meetings?"
"It wasn't mentioned. They were into mind stuff though. Frightening!"
"Think about it," she said crisply, "If I could prove it I would go to the police."
