Sharon hit me for information the next morning; I was hardly out of the bath before she hit the doorbell hard. She was so annoyingly cheerful.
“What went on at the meeting?” she snapped out making coffee as if the kitchen was her own!
“Odd things,” I replied cautiously trying not to bring back the final image. “The two tripod’s were back to back. It was a big do, where were you?”
“Ah!” said Sharon, “I’d been detailed to talk to the church at Hellgate…”
“Church at Hellgate? Is that a place?”
“It was in the city before, unfortunately the old church couldn’t keep up with their progressive ways, and they closed them down.”
“How progressive?” I asked half interested, “Why are you involved.”
“I went years ago,” she replied calmly, “Some of the stuff they do is good and some isn’t so good, as humanity goes it’s normal. For instance they don’t believe in the Bible, they consider it a story for children. They practise and teach Christianity religiously, and ask others to apply for courses such as faith healing, etc. They practise the laying on of hands, to open the mind to the unknown.”
“That sounds really quite interesting,” I found myself saying, “I’ve always fancied faith healing myself.”
“I’ll put you in touch with them,” she said tiredly, “They run a phone-line thing during the day, I’ll add your number to the link, and people will call you to talk over their day with you, all you do is phone the next person on this list.”
She fished out a list of numbers and added mine to the middle between two others. “It’s a bit odd at first, don’t worry, it will be easy in a few day’s time.”
I took the list speechlessly, I wasn’t sure I was that interested.
“A lot of the group are on the list,” she went on, “It’s good to feel on the same wavelength. Christians are great on unity!”
“Are they really Christians?” I asked quietly.
“Well, probably not as you know them,” she replied coldly, “However there is a lack of belief in the world, we fill the gap.”
“Are you sure it’s not occult?”
“We don’t sacrifice anyone,” snapped Sharon upset at last, “It’s just that that,We produce results. We play games that’s all. We provoke people to believe.”
“Do you believe that the world is going to end?” I enquired nervously, after all we were edge to edge with 2012.
“Yes,” she replied shortly, “ Without a doubt. The ice giants are moving. And there’s worse things abroad. Some of it, some of it, terrifies me.” Her voice drained away, her face was white and strained. She sat there drinking coffee and wiping tears from her eyes. Her usual effrontery and briskness was all gone. I couldn’t find it in me to say I had no knowledge of such creatures. Or voice the fact that these had nothing to do with Christianity.
“What else have you been up too?”
“Oh I got asked to talk to the sheltered dwellngs etc, about possible missing relations – sometimes they know things we don’t know. Keeps their minds active too.”
