The Olympian Kiss.

They carry it high, these runners, their arms up,
in a dance of delight, zig-zag from side to side,
under the watchful eyes of the Olympicians.

Every mile is a triumph, hard won, each step
counted towards the end of the line, where
the flame lights the beacon for sport.

All the towns and cities are the same; united
in answer, a light in each heart, a hope that
says, "It could be me, taking part, it could be

my brother, or son, or daughter or next door neighbour!"
In every place a community figure, a spark of originality.
We are taking the strain, developing the fame....
