Humanity made sadness an illness
And that's how they tried to cope,
When people were lonely or unemployed
Or had no sense of hope.
A twentieth century illness
Of the kind that doctors discover,
With valium, clomipramine or prozac
The patients seemed to recover.

By making sadness an illness
People could cope with the pain,
Their pills and psychotherapy
Could make them well again.
A good psychotherapy system
Was easier than changing the world,
Being kind to eachother would cost even more,
The medical solution was preferred.
