An homage to my favourite poem “The Raven” by Edgar Allan Poe

The Raven Returned

Rain danced naked, moon-lit windows,

torrents of water streaking down panes,

thunder boomed like a bass drum,

lightening-fired skies, phosphorus kindling.

As I stared into my crystal tumbler,

cut-glass embalmed with amber,

a noise, a rapping, a tap-tap-tapping

could be heard in the desolate ether.

In the corner and above the door,

silent silhouettes, a raven whispering,

my lament was true for my Lenore, 

as the bird spoke, spoke once more.

I saw a graveyard shrouded in mist,

moss-covered epitaph etched in tears,

bygone times now mordant memories,

age-old pictures painted; sepia tones.

Black eyes piercing, feathers of ebony,

staring into my angst-ridden soul,

spells and conjurations, roaming spirits,

ancient ghosts, love now long past.

I had never read the poem of Poe's and have just had a quick look. I found the rhyming scheme fascinating and probably lifting the content a bit, and in the content that strange mixture of wanting to leave and smile again, wanting to remember and wanting to dwell on sadness. That seems to suit your intorduction to his poem too, and your description of the weather sets the mood for his thoughts. Rhiannon

Thanks for reading, Rhiannon. Poe's poem is a lengthy affair and has been parodied many times. Most people probably know it from a Halloween episode of "The Simpsons". I think I read you are off on holiday shortly and will be offline? Have a wonderful time! Paul

Thanks. Yes, we have 'old-fasioned' mobles, but not smarphones. Will try to catch up with site reading afterwards! May get some nature verse composed! Rhiannon

you certainly have his chanting rhythm!

I particularly liked :

As I stared into my crystal tumbler,

had not thought of liquid as being like that for glasses, great image :0)

Hi Paul, loved this poem, full of drama and haunting discovery. I think Po would be very grateful to think he inspired this poem. You've really captured his essence.
