The Road to Infinity

Reefer in the half-light;
Burnt-out match on the table-top.
Fumes of ecstasy spiral upwards
Through night’s grey afterglow,
Cleansed by outflooding darkness.
Divide into screaming gargoyles of vapour;
Transmit paranoia to my trembling brain,
Lifting neurons into a serotonic orbit.
Wild lands beyond the hemp-blurred rooms siren-call to me;
Promises of destiny.
Wires in the wall warn of predators outside;
Explain I will be invisible
To the alpha-wave gazes without my clothes.
Stride along the red-edged highway
Towards the roaring ocean,
Nude body shivering in the near-zero sunlight.
Translucent blue glow pervades the world;
See myself walking back from infinity
On the other side of the road,
A fire-gold figure enveloped in an incandescent blaze.
Shingle on the lonely beach,
Sea-gulls in the awakening sky,
Fox scavenging in the empty car-park:
The cries come out to me
To help the captives of the sea.
To talk, to recite, to chant.
Solace; comfort; compassion.
Wade into the ocean;
Push back the waves of impossibility.
Recite my poem, “Visions of a Night-Time God” --
A comfort because everyone can rule the universe
Between the life-beats of their subconscious mind.
Waves close over my head,
Expelling the endless from my mind.
Hear the voices of the damned
Chanting endlessly “All nightmares of the wilderness erased.”
Waters enter my soul;
I am at one with the ocean.
No more need for the finite.
