Bonfire Night

I lit a bonfire
For me and you
Beneath it we burnt bright
While transitory flares flew high and
Briefly mocked our stature
With bursts sufficient only
For a taciturn twist of the head
Fading to earth as empty vessels
Bereft of venom's false attention
Their noises will be aped
By future pyrotechnics
In a pretence that they are
Celebrating history or conspiracy
But they will only glimmer and fade
Beneath the torch of our ashes
Which will rise in the grey November dawn
And be lifted beyond their angry sparks
And blaze brilliantly
Encircling the globe
Igniting forever dawn and dusk alike
