On my way to Mums, the taxi driver told me, “When we broke down in London, we didn’t have breakdown cover, we had to wait hours, when the Patrol arrived, he said, “‘It will cost you £350.00 to get you home,’” The taxi driver said, “Can we become a member?” The Patrol said, “It takes 24 hours to become a member,” So, they had no choice, but to pay the £350.00 to get them home with their car. I said, “That’s because it is a business,” He said, “Yes, it is.” I told him, “My breakdown cover is through my car insurance and it is much cheaper.”
On Thursday, I had put £30 worth of diesel in my car, as I knew I would be with Mum for 5 days it was my turn for the long weekend with her, from Thursday each day until Monday night. Now my car was outside the garage with an almost full tank of diesel!
On the way back to Mums the patrol man said to me, “I strongly advise you not to go ahead with the MOT on Tuesday, it is not worth it, spending more on the car, than it is worth, you don’t want to take on the problems of an old car, for them to patch it up and you end up with it.” I said, “I agree with you.” Then he went on, “Buy a Honda, they never break down,” I said, “I will investigate it.” The patrol man then said, “Buy a German or Japanese car, they are reliable.” I said, “OK.” Finally, he said, “You might get, “One hundred and fifty pounds for it scrap!”
Within the hour of leaving the superstore, I was back at Mums! William had taken a picture of Mums lovely breakfast and sent it to me.
I told William what the Patrol man had said, he said, “All cars can break down, if they are not cared for, my BMW, I had to spend £4.500 on the repairs.” WOW, I thought that is another level! For me, that would be the price of the whole car.
Back at Mums, with the sad news of the death that I had heard about in the morning, shock of that was still in the back of my mind. Then the texts we had all been waiting for, another text arrived of the details of the funeral we will all be going to on February 3rd as I sat on the sofa, I read the text and was Very sad, a tear came down my face, for her death was SO unexpected, and a massive shock to us all. As sad and gutted as I was about the car, at the end of the day, it is only a car, no one in my family had died, a car can be replaced. I thought of these two young people, who didn’t know each other, now deceased. It was a sad day, and for their young children.
I stayed over at Mums, and later Paul text me and said, “See what the engineer says first before you write it off, maybe he can fix it, because you need a car.” That is a good idea, one step at a time.
Today, Sunday, I walked to the superstore, with 2 strong bags, and got food shop for Mum and my family, I also got out cash back, to go home in a taxi tonight.
An hour later William rang me and asked, “How are you getting home tonight?” I said, “I have taken out £20 I will go home in a taxi,” He said, “That’ll be £40 in two days, I will take you home,” I said, “Thank you SO much.” He is a very good driver.
RIP E.G.
