Dark Places

Laughter from a passing crowd,
Turns my room into a shroud.
Wrapped around me like a moonless night.
A telephone that doesn't ring,
The morning post that doesn't bring,
A letter that would give a little light.
Nights that take a year to pass,
Dreams that cut like broken glass.
Morning sun that never comes inside.
Friends who used to pass the time,
It seems were friends of yours not mine.
And disappeared just like the ebbing tide.
Perfumes that you wore remind me,
Films we saw bring tears that blind me.
Songs we used to love now cause me pain.
Memories of the jokes we shared,
Bring back to me the time you cared,
Before you put me in the dark again.
Coming back to haunt me,
Like a ball and chain you taunt me.
Every second I'm alone is so unkind.
In the darkness of the evening,
I sit listening to my breathing.
Every breath a sullen burden on my mind.
Dark places, deep and dark, dark places.
Save a place for me, I'm on my way.
The devil's won his little game,
He's got a place that bears my name,
Make some room inside the dark for me.
