Bringing down the birds

I have never walked across this field before
it's not one of those fields for walking across
it has crops that are probably important
but it's been freshly ploughed
by a happy red loyal tractor
and when you are told by medical experts
to be two metres away from any other human
walking across a ploughed field sounds appealing.
Childrens' books teach us that farmers
are happy, jolly, avuncular types
maybe that's what I'm looking for as I lie down
on the comfortable dirt looking up at how blue
the sky is wondering what all the birds make of this
I'm not going to mention to them what's happening
I'm sure they figure these things out for themselves.
'I'm John' I will say to the farmer if one approaches me
'thanks for letting me walk across your field.'
