Doodle

I draw in paperbacks
while trying to decipher sub-plots
and wondering if there is hidden meanings
in every paragraph.

I doodled insects
around the edges of the pages
of Metamorphosis.
I turned the Ks of Kafka
into beetles.
Anyone opening at page 17
would fear infestation.

I sketched syringes
in the spaces provided
by chapter's ending at the top
of the page.
I drew the outlines of needles
being pushed into veins
and then returned it to the library.

I wrote the lyrics to Teenage Kicks
on a tombstone i drew
by the index of a John Peel biography.
I doodled a man in headphones
and can't remember if it was supposed to be him
or me.

When I finished The Rachel Papers
by Martin Amis
I turned to the title page
and drew a great big cock.
