Milkshakes on Wednesdays

At the time it felt like a more interesting way of saying goodbye
'We should do this every Wednesday' I said
so that's what we did the next week
the same booth, the same Polish waitress.
We made such big plans in that Covent Garden cafe
it was only on the Thursday I'd realise
we can't open a vegetarian restaurant in Vietnam
we've both got jobs, stuff to do,
but when there was strawberry being sucked through those straws
everything we said, we meant.
I always ordered strawberry
you chose something different every week
and when you realised you'd been through every flavour on the menu
you went through to the kitchen
you and the chef were in there for an hour
with blenders, mixing bowls, whisks
and you came out beaming such a smile
a glass of lime green liquid
'Taste this' you said
bending the straw towards me
but I still preferred my strawberry.
After a few months we started to set each other challenges
one Tuesday night you called me and said
tomorrow you will be Batman
and I will be Robin.
The other customers looked confused at the sight of us
in fancy dress lycra
complaining about our colds.
The next week I texted you 'New Romantics'
the week afterwards 'bride and groom'
you brought your little sister with you
to help you with your trail.
'Have you noticed we haven't paid our bill in months?' I asked.
You nodded and said
'And what about those photographs of us on the wall.'
I pointed at the one of us dressed as Sonny and Cher
'Do you remember that day?
That's when you got a call from the man who'd found your dog
and we finished our milkshakes in the taxi
on the way to his house.'
