Sinister and bright over the land

You sold your house to find out how it would feel
to sell your house
and now you have nothing.
The plan was to grow things
but instead you're just confused
you have taken it hard, turning forty,
and the death of both next-door neighbours
in the space of a month
it makes you feel dizzy,
all those people you've never seen before
loading boxes of plates into a van.
You took for granted, those cars in the driveways
they were just always there,
like curtains that have never needed replacing
telegraph poles don't look that important
they're not ugly just boring, like Lincolnshire
like the man who works in the corner shop
who always wears the same jumper
like the things he sells, so often
you look on his shelves and realise
no you don't really want anything
just a two litre bottle of milk
and you'll see him again when that runs out.
