Stupid moon

We were there for the eclipse,

people say sometimes when telling

a happy story about a time they were in Cornwall

or the north of France with friends.

My dad likes talking about the Cold War

he loves telling people how scared he was.

Once someone mentions a nucelar bomb,

that's you buzzing for the rest of the day.

You flinch as things explode on YouTube

sitting there with a bowl of granola

and your fingers in your ears.

I used to live near an airport and it was exciting

seeing planes above our garden

the constant trails of jetstream

until I realised how limited the destinations are

when you're flying from Humberside Airport

most people were just heading over

to get their connecting flight at Amsterdam Schipol.
