You shout crossword clues
while I iron my work shirts.
Katie has just phoned
to say she's landed in Orlando,
the plants have started to blossom
and there's a stack of DVDs we ordered on Amazon
we still haven't watched.
Stuart Maconie is on the radio,
you like him
and the chicken is nearly roasted
and our friends will be here soon
and we've a case of red wine to get through
but I can't help but look at the patio doors
and imagine an elbow through the glass,
a man holding a gun in your mouth
while I fill a bag with our valuables.

i love this piece. Its one of those great poems that you wish you'd written yourself. Subtle and yet quite harrowing in an odd kind of way. Definately deserves the cherry!

that 'you like him' for some
that 'you like him' for some reason is quite arresting and really breaks up the two stanzas, perhaps it is the only line in the poem that seems to be direct speech rather than internal monologue.
Once again this very much has the john osborne stamp on it with a twist in the end, and the childlike quality where you build up images with the and and and which is so hypnotic.
very much liked this one too.
