“You have just become a character in my poem” I think
as the conductor hole punches an ‘okay’ into my ticket
tells me I'll need to change at Leeds
then breezes down the aisle
saying 'Tickets please, ladies and gentlemen'
and as he wakes one of last night’s ravers from her Red Bull slumber.
He has no idea I am doodling his face
on the back of my railcard,
thinking of scenarios I can write for him.
I imagine him this morning
in his pyjamas, waiting for the toast to pop
unaware that later that day
he would meet a stranger on a train
and become a character in his poem
that may become a movie.

wonderful - just loved it - a very john osborne kind of poem, filled with imagination and wonder in the most mundane situations.
