Catching Spricks By The Mill
‘By Paul McCann
Catching spricks in the Milley Dam
was like going on a safari adventure
you bring buckets and glass jars
and you would never know what you might find while you’re there .
We found speckled frogs and we saw two white swans in a nest .
there were beetles and bugs ,
buzzing bees and flying midgets
and all kings of squishy slugs .
With wild dogs barking at your heels
and wiggly worms as big eels around the dam
looking at what you were doing.
There were flippy flop fish who lived inside a clam
and the bog creatures swimming around
unseen in the unknown depths of the Milley;
Everyone who went catching spricks
had to be brave and a little bit silly .
At the end of the hunt we would return home
with a sprick of two in a glass jar .
The village kids made up their own fun
and we all had the best adventures by far
