The police stopped the public from any further interference with the punishment and told all of the people in the town why the man was being punished . The police informed the public that he had helped all the prisoners escape from prison and now all the people in the town were in danger because dangerous prisoners had escaped and were on the run .

A large crowd was gathering and asking the police questions about why he had set the prisoners free and what was going to be done about catching them and  where abouts in the city of the escaped prisoners .

The police could see the crowd were unsettled and in their efforts to restore some order they made up stories about how prison officers had been attacked by the prisoner pulling the cart . They tried to cover up their cruelty and criminal acts by creating stories that weren’t true . They continued with the approach that the prisoner had to be taught a lesson and punished for his actions . They explained how the prisoners who had escaped were being rounded up and that everything was under control .

Most of the local people seemed to believe their stories .

Peter the night guard who sat on the cart however knew the truth about what had really happened . He decided hie would make a stand and told everyoine who had gather how he had miraculously regained his eyesight ,

The he jumped off the cart and said he wasn’t going to use the whip be part of this punishment because it was wrong .  Some of the local people started to  listen to the jailer who spoke up for the prisoner being punished . Peter then started to talk about other facts he had been told about the man known as a teacher and master . The police on duty stopped Peter talking and tied him up along side the prisoner and made them both pull the cart through town in the heat of the day .  Several police men who were now sitting in the cart began to shout verbal insults at the two men pulling the cart . The prisoner fell unconscious again and was whipped until he regained consciousness.

Then the police all started shouting  

“So where are all your friends now when you need them . They’ve all deserted you. Some gang you have , who can’t lift a finger to support you. “

 

Peter spoke up ,

‘I’m your friend and I’ll gladly stand here beside you :’

 your love has never died ,it lives eternally .

 

As the prisoner and Peter pulled the cart through the streets of town some of the people began to walk away . They lost interest in the punishment and went about their day doing the everyday things that had to be done .

When Pater fell, unconscious pulling the cart the police dragged him away and left him on the side of the road leaving only the prisoner to pull the cart up the hill on the road back to the prison , Half way up the hill the prisoner fell unconscious again , After whipping him again and again the prisoner never regained consciousness and after checking him he was pronounced dead .

They placed his body into a bag and buried it in a shallow grave on the side of the road near the prison and went on about their day as if nothing had happened .  

Later in the day a storm arose and rain lashed down . In the flood waters the  body bag was washed out from where it had been buried and ended up being found by members of the public but when they opened up the bag all they found was some clothing and a note that said .

You Cannot Bury The Truth

A body was never found and the case still remains a mystery today. 

 

 

Peters body was found he was given a decent burial by the local community who were not happy about what had occurred . They started a protest against the authorities and as the news spread about the cruel treatment of police the civil rights movement had taken heed of what was said and began to make their voice with organising some protest marches  .

When the media got hold of the story of the protests they covered the story on the national network . Soon other protest marches began to take place all over the country   There was an uprising all over the country that made internation news and before long other countries were getting involved in what had happened  .

An investigation was made by an outside authority that uncovered a large section of the law enforcement in that town were crooked cops .

Under interrogation some of those men cracked and confessed to the murder and mistreatment of an innocent man who was taken into their  custody and as result of their cruelty he had died  . It wasn’t long before other similar cases unfolded with stories and unsolved cases that took many months to investigate . Eventually all the gang of crooked cops were rounded up and held accountable for many deaths in prisons all over the county .
