The fact that nurses are underpaid is well known .
The fact that nurses are over worked is well known .
The fact that we get old and sick is well known .
The fact that nurses are often having to update their skills , gain further education , become aware of new procedures and policies and take on board conflict resolutions with their employers is well known .
So why then are nurses the lowest paid and most unappreciated people who continue to hold down jobs most people would not even consider as an occupation .
The answer is because they care .
So it seems to me it's only fair that we care for them in return .
The future of our health care system must begin at the bottom , with those who do the work , our nurses .'
Without nurses the system cannot survive .
A tribute poem for nurses.
Safe In The Nurses Hands .
By Paul McCann
Nurses were there when we were born
and they're with us till we die .
When others say they can't or won't,
then nurses will say they'll try .
Nurses have lists of people there
who daily need tending to .
Nurses do daily things that have become difficult to do .
Personal hygiene is more than soap
or sponging in a bath .
Ask nurses is it important
and they'll say to you "Not half ."
Prevention against infection
is always a daily task .
Hand over greetings and weekly meetings ,
what more can we ask .
Dressing wounds and medication spoons,
late afternoons and nights .
Handing out procedures
of responsibilities and rights .
When work loads are heavy
and the evaluations are done .
Nurses together join hands
and lift the burden as one .
If more incentives are not there to encourage people to pursue a nursing career then the hope of rebuilding the narrowing rank and file within nursing will be in serious threat .
Government and employers must start to address these areas .
So the next time you're in a hospital , or need a nurse at home , or visit a nursing home or need help with a loved one who may be disabled or at deaths door , don't take for granted the person who cares .
