More On Poetry Form
Poetry is a high art form and as such must be elavated to its rightful place in English expression .
I would like to continue my work on adapting certain methods called poetry structure in order to create new inspiration as well as providing an exercise to stretch and strengthen the ways in which we choose our words .
I would like to share with you some five new forms here in writin poetry .
In addition to these five structure I have other articles I have written should you desrie to view them .
I firmly believe that poetry structures are useful tools that will give you more depth and understanding to what you write ..
Poetry is a disciplined expression of the written word and the use of structures provide the tools of trade of poetry writing.
Structure 1
Semetric Form
This is a style I created myself and has a focus on repeating the words used in each line .
The poem is broken up into two parts with the each section being a mirrored replica of itself and continues to the finish of the poem .
My Examples
From Here To There
By Paul McCann
A lifetime spend on bended knee ,
On bended knee a lifetime spent .
I beg of thee turn and repent ,
Turn and repent I beg of thee .
We leave behind this mortal life .
This mortal life we leave behind
In shades of time all will be mine .
All will be mine in shades of time .
Glory Be Praised
By Paul McCann
I am alive because of him .
Because of him I am alive .
Man cannot live on bread alone .
On bread alone man cannot survive .
I'm nourished by the living word .
The living word I'm nourished by .
They shall not die who ever hears .,
Who ever hears they shall not die .
We shall be raised on the last day .
On the last day we shall we raised .
Your name be praised forever Lord.
Forever Lord your name be praised .
Before the night there is the dawn .
There is a dawn before the night .
With all my might I love thee Lord
I love thee Lord with all my might .
Structure 2
Stepladder Form
This is a style I created that employs syllable count .
The syllable count in the first line of the poem doubles up in the second and continues to double up to a point in the poem where the doubling up stops and dividing in half begins to the end of the poem .
The last word in each line should rhyme with the previous line .
My Examples
Where Rivers Run
By Paul McCann
Sheet rain
Fell down again ,
On the other side of the road
Gardens were watered and on houses blocked gutters had overflowed .
The rain never stopped for days and somewhere a river rose and flooded a town that was completely cut off and still the river ran ..
Cars were washed away like toys in the flow that had widened its span .
Meanwhile cars drove fast through our town .
They don't slow down .
.You know .
No .
The Soul Cut
By Paul McCann
When I go out
I carry my scissors about
So everything I see I don't like I can cut them away .
I sharpen my scissors on the edge of reality and keep them stainless in the pockets of my soul where truth will guide my way .
I snip back the time between you and I for I cannot wait any longer to see the smile on your face and the love in your eye and every day each step of the way all I do is cut back the tears that want to fall because I miss you here every day .
What a wonderful gift are these scissors that you bought for me my love and I will keep them in my pockets until the end of time .
I'll never cut back forever as being with you there is fine .
There is no end to its measure .
The hearts treasure .
Its you .
True .
Structure 3
Letterspeak
Here is another structre I created called Letterspeak .
With this form choose any one word topic or theme .
Then use each consecutive letter in the theme or topic to describe the various aspects to the theme .
My Examples
Letters in Love
By Paul McCann
How does one spell love .
L are for lips to be kissed , O is for a good sound .
V is very nice , E doesn't mean it must end .
And that's the love I've found .
What's In The Wind
By Paul McCann
How does one spell wind .
W is for the whoosh it makes and I is for what's incoming with it .
N is the nature of its character and D is for where it domains
in and after its flit .
Structure 4
Line Down
This is a style I created that depends on one line of poetry to begin .
Basically this form uses each consecutive word on the first line of the poem to the first word of every other line in the poem to its end .
My Examples
Coming Out Of The Cave
There was a man who lived in a dark cave
Was he hiding or was he in his grave ?
A saint or a hermit or a caveman .
Man had knowledge . He was part of a plan .
Who left the cave ? We did , before our birth .
Lived and loved just for a while here on earth .
In time we evolved and now we are here .
A spiritual world is ever so near .
Dark to the night and lost with insight .
Cave creatures coming back into the light .
By Paul McCann
Structure 5
Vowel-In
This is a style I created that employs the use of vowels .
The way this structure works is each consecutive word in poem begins with each consecutive vowel from A to U and continues to the conclusion of the poem .
My Examples
Speak Uneasy
By Paul McCann
An English Intelligence Officer Underwent
An Extensive Interrogation On Using
Alliteration .
Eventually Instead Of Understanding Adjacent Evidence
In Oral Undertones And Expressions , It Outspoke Ultimatums .
