The Value of Nothing

Let us play Pooh-sticks with breeze blocks over the motorway
And hear the brittle smashes of metal fishes beneath us;
What a way to spend a summer’s day!
Let us burn churches and toast marshmallows to while away
The long nights, fuelling fire with vile bile from guileful bibles;
What a way to spend a summer’s night!
Why try to be moral when there is no such thing?
You cannot annihilate nihilism.
Let us hate with all our hearts, and never love, for it ends in pain.
Or, at the very best, death; grief will massacre memory.
What a way to ruin your lover’s life!
Let us know there’s no soul in a mate and no goal we can gain
From making lovers from one another; we smother to cover each other;
What a way to ruin your lonely life!
Why try to be hopeful when there is no such hope?
You cannot assassinate cynicism.
