You had me at hello.

We sat in awkward silence until a maid came down the aisle with the food cart.
“Can I get anyone anything” the maid asked in a bored worn out voice.
“A coffee for me please, can I get you anything” I gestured at the young girl across from me.
“Coffee again please” she blushed, and flashed an unfaltering smile at me. Instantly I was transported, utterly lost in her eyes and I think at that very moment I completely understood what love at first sight truly was, it was her and me. I was enchanted by presence.
“Sir, excuse me, sir!” The maid agitatedly barked at me, immediately snapping me out of the spell the girl had cast on me. Whereas she just sat there giggling, I felt like a soppy, love struck boy who was way out of his depth.
“Will that be all?” the maid asked obviously eager to get away.
“Yes, yes thank you” The words tripped out, I felt as if this girl had taken my breath away but how was that possible? Her smile, the way her hair framed her face, her eyes, everything about her was perfect
“How long will you be on the train for?” Her voice cut softly through my clouded thoughts.
“2 hours, off to see my parents for the weekend, I don’t get to see them often. What about you?”
“Oh just for an hour, I’m spending the weekend with my friend she has a small apartment with ocean views. It’s beautiful, in the morning if you get up before dawn you can watch the sun rise over the ocean and the whole bay lights up, sunlight bouncing off of every surface it touches. From purple to pink to orange, it really is stunning” I stared at her in awe wishing I could think like that. I caught her gaze when she quickly folded her arms in her lap and turned away, her cheeks turning a faint shade of pink.
“Sorry I was rambling, just ignore me.” She gave a nervous laugh and continued to stare out of the window
“It sounds beautiful; I’d like to see it someday.”
“I have some photos here in my bag” Her face flushed with excitement, as she reached across the seat and opened the frayed suitcase, drawing out a stack of beautiful prints. I walked around the table, so I was sat next to her. As she passed me the pictures her hand softly brushed mine, I wanted to tell her how stunning she was but I knew the words would come out all wrong. Silently I took the photos, spending time to carefully admire each one. I could feel her gaze on me. I knew she was waiting for my response. Carefully I picked the first one off of the top of the pile and held it up to the light. It was true the pictures honestly were delightful, the way the sun played on the water’s edge, but I just didn’t have the words to tell her.
“Do you take a lot of photos? These are really quite excellent, I love them!” This was the best I could say.
“Do you really think so? I don’t really take that many, not as many as I want to, you see I can’t afford a better camera at the moment.” I could see the sadness form in her eyes “I asked my parents but, the thing is they think it’s a waste of time and money.’ She looked away obviously embarrassed about revealing so much to an almost complete stranger but i didn’t feel like a stranger, I felt as if I had known her all of my life.
“Have you shown them your photos I’m sure then they would see how talented you truly are?”
“Oh well, it doesn’t matter.” She laughed it off, but anyone could tell she was hurting. I placed a comforting arm around her shoulder, expecting her to shake it off but instead she moved in closer and rested her head up against me.
The next time the maid with the food cart passed us by we were laughing so hard our sides could’ve split.
“Excuse me! Sir, madam excuse me!” she barked at us once more. We tried our best to hold back the regular bursts of laughter, but with no luck.
“Is there anything I can get you?” She hissed, her voice laced with venom at our happiness.
“Nothing for me, thank you” I said hurriedly “anything for you?” I turned and smiled at the beautiful women to the side of me.
“Oh, another coffee if you insist!”
“Are you sure you can handle it, you are already bouncing off the walls after only one.” I said through giggles I could not possibly contain.
“I beg your pardon, I am perfectly capable of drinking two cups of coffee and not turning into a five year old” she pretended to be offended at my comment, for a moment I was worried she was offended until she said “Actually hold back on the coffee, maybe sir her is right” giving me an over dramatic wink.
The maid then shot us a look that could melt steel, and with a theatrical sigh grabbed the cart and moved on.
“Grumpy old woman can’t see the funny side in anything.” She said looking slightly deflated.
“Don’t worry about her, you’ve got me to cheer you up!” I said as I pushed her up against the window and started tickling her. I felt so comfortable in her presence.
As she slowly started to recover from the horridness fits of laughter, she took my hand in hers and said “you are honestly the most ridiculous man I have ever met, but I kind of like you”
“Well you are in luck because I kind of like you too” I replied, she took a deep breath in and sighed loudly
“Well this is my stop” She said, obviously down hearted that her journey had come to an end “but here is my number, call me?” she took out a piece of paper and furiously scribbled down a number, handed it to me, picked up her suitcase and hurried out off the train followed by her little pup.
Please don’t be in love with someone else, I thought desperately, please don’t have someone waiting up for you.
