It was almost the end of term and Class 3 were saying goodbye to their teacher Mrs. Henderson. She was leaving for a new job in New Zealand.
‘Goodbye everybody!’ she said. ‘I will miss you all very much!’
‘Goodbye Mrs. Henderson!’ the children said.
The Headteacher had given Class 3 special permission to go to the airport to say goodbye to Mrs. Henderson. They stood and waved as she climbed the steps onto her airplane. The air stewardess shut the doors and the engines roared. Slowly the plane turned into the wind. The children could see Mrs. Henderson’s face smiling at the window.
The engines got louder and louder.
‘Bye-bye!’ the children shouted. Miss Victor, their new teacher, was with them, keeping them safe. She waved too as the plane raced faster and faster before zooming off into the sky.
Soon it was the holidays and all the children had fun at home with their families. When they came back to school, Miss Victor was their new teacher and they were having more fun than ever in the classroom…until one strange morning everything changed…
It was a Maths lesson and Katie was doing a complicated sum on the board.
21 – 4 =
‘What’s the answer, Katie?’ asked Miss Victor.
‘WOOF!’
The children all laughed.
‘Did you say, ‘WOOF’, Katie?’
‘No!’ said Katie. ‘I said seventeen.’
‘Well, seventeen is the right answer but who said ‘WOOF’?’
The children looked around.
‘Was it you?’
‘Was it YOU?’
‘It’s coming from outside!’ said Alex.
The children all looked out of the classroom window.
There was a furry, friendly face hovering in the air just outside their classroom.
Who was it? Class 3 knew.
‘LOLA THE WONDER DOG!’ They all shouted. Lola was a famous superhero in the city. She was also a sausage dog!
Miss Victor opened the classroom door and let Lola in. The children all cheered and ran up to give her a stroke and a cuddle.
‘Children! I haven’t got time for a cuddle!’ said Lola. ‘Mrs. Henderson is in trouble – she needs our help!’
‘What’s happened?’ asked Samantha.
Lola explained.
‘Mrs. Henderson’s plane was flying across the ocean to New Zealand when it got zapped by the Wicked Witch of the Oceans. The Wicked Witch has horrible green hair just like seaweed – she is jealous of Mrs. Henderson’s long blonde hair. She is going to keep Mrs. Henderson under the water forever and turn her into a fish!’
‘A FISH?!’ shouted Class 3.
‘Yes, a fish!’ said Lola. ‘I can’t rescue Mrs. Henderson on my own, it’s too far for even a Wonder Dog to fly. I need the cleverest and bravest children in all the land to help me…that’s why I came straight to Class 3.’
‘We need a plan.’ said Kiera. ‘What are we going to do?’
Aidan said, ‘The boys could build a boat to sail across the ocean to the Wicked Witch’s Kingdom, then we could rescue her.’
Elisa said, ‘The girls could work on a magic spell to protect Mrs. Henderson from the Witch’s magic.’
‘Yeah!’ said Class 3. ‘Let’s do it!’
So the boys gathered together all the chairs and tables from the classroom and began to make them into a giant boat, big enough to carry all the children plus one super-powered dog.
And the girls got together and started practising magic spells.
‘A ziggedy-zaggedy-zoop!’ Katie tried.
Emma went ‘Miaow!’
She had turned into a cat!
‘Turn me back!’ said Emma.
‘A zoogedy-zaggedy-zeep!’ went Charlotte.
‘Phew, that’s much better,’ said Emma.
‘Careful, girls,’ said Lola. ‘We want to turn Mrs. Henderson back into a human, not a cat!’
‘Don’t worry, we’ll sort it out!’ said the girls.
‘The boat’s ready!’ said the boys.
All of Class 3 got into the boys’ boat. Lola used her Wonder Dog powers to lift it high into the air, high over the city. The children waved down at their school and Miss Victor shouted back up, ‘Make sure you look after them, Lola!’
Lola went, ‘Woof!’
The boat flew all the way across the city until it reached the river. Lola let go with a HUGE sigh of relief and the boat went
neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeoooooooooooooooooowwwww
PLOP!
into the water.
‘Yay!’ called out the children. The water splished and sploshed around them, running fast down the river into the sea.
Lola grabbed on to the back of the boat with her teeth and she pushed, using her super-powered tail like a propeller, spinning round and round.
‘Wheeee!’ called the children. The boat zoomed over the waves, past big boats and little boats, seagulls and submarines, dolphins and whales, on its way to the Kingdom of the Wicked Witch.
Soon the children of Class 3 came to a mysterious whirlpool. It spun round and round, and went deep, deep, down like a dark tunnel under the waves.
‘Be brave!’ called Lola, and pushed the boat into the whirlpool.
WHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
The boat was sucked down through the deep tunnel of churning black water. The surprised children looked at the faces of the fish passing by, which looked just as surprised.
‘BLUB. What are all these children doing under water?’
Soon Lola and Class 3 were at the bottom of the sea. They stepped off the boat and their feet sank into the soft, squidgy sand.
‘How come we can breathe?’ asked Samantha.
‘The Witch keeps her Kingdom under a magic bubble of air,’ said Lola. ‘I bet we’ll find Mrs. Henderson around here somewhere.’
And the children started searching high and low. Every time they met a fish they stopped it and asked – ‘Are you Mrs. Henderson?’
They looked at a big green fish – ‘Are you Mrs. Henderson?’
‘BLUB. NO!’
They looked at a little blue fish – ‘Are you Mrs. Henderson?’
‘BLUB. NO!’
They looked at a baby octopus swimming all on her own– ‘Are you Mrs. Henderson?’
‘MEEP. NO!’
‘Where is she?’ asked Lola.
‘YOU’LL NEVER SAVE HER!’ shouted a booming, angry voice.
The children and Lola looked round.
Coming out of the darkness, there was a tall, menacing figure. She had blue skin and evil eyes and slimy green hair that wibbled and wobbled like seaweed.
‘The Wicked Witch of the Oceans!’
‘Yes, that’s me!’ snarled the Witch. ‘And I’ve got your teacher Mrs. Henderson. I’ve turned her into a fish!’
The Witch held up a little goldfish with blue eyes.
‘IT’S MRS. HENDERSON!’ shouted the children.
‘BLUB. YES!’ said the worried-looking fish.
‘Her hair was just too long and blonde, it made me sick. So now I’ve turned her into a fish and I’m going to cook her for my tea…Hahaha! Fish and chips for me!’
And the Wicked Witch magicked up a whole kitchen around her!
She picked up Mrs. Henderson by the tail and put her in the frying pan!
Lola the Wonder Dog rushed to the rescue. She flew fast, with her cape flapping behind her, and rescued Mrs. Henderson from the pan.
‘Use your magic!’ said Lola.
‘A ziggedy-zaggedy-zoop!’ said the girls.
Magic light shot out and touched Mrs. Henderson the fish.
‘Miaow!’ said Mrs. Henderson.
‘Oh no!’ said the children.
‘I AM GOING TO GET YOU!’ shouted the Wicked Witch. She charged towards the class!
‘We’ll help you!’ said the other fish. And the big green fish and the little blue fish and even the baby octopus grabbed on to the bottom of the Witch’s dress and held tight so she couldn’t hurt the children.
‘Quickly, try again, use your magic!’ said Lola.
‘A zoogedy-zaggedy-zeep!’ said the girls.
Mrs. Henderson stood up. She looked at her hands. She felt her face.
‘I’m not a fish…I’m not a cat…I’m me!’ she said. ‘Thank you, Class 3 – and thank you, Lola!’
‘No problem,’ said the children.
‘Boys – get the boat!’ said Lola. So the boys ran and fetched the boat. Everyone got inside and Lola grabbed onto the back and pushed really hard, using her super-powered tail as a propeller.
The Witch waved her fist and shouted at them. ‘Come back here! I’m going to turn you into fish and chips! I’VE got the prettiest hair in the ocean, not you! GRRRRRRR!’
The big green fish and the little blue fish and even the baby octopus waved bye-bye. ‘BLUB. Don’t worry about this mean old Witch,’ they said. ‘We’ll take care of her!’ And they dragged her off to get her slimy hair washed.
The Class 3 boat went back up the whirlpool, out of the water and into the sunshine.
‘Where to?’ asked Lola.
‘Home please!’ said the children.
Soon Mrs. Henderson, and Lola, and the children were all back at school and it was almost time to go home.
‘I’m glad you’re all safe and sound,’ said Miss Victor. ‘Well done, Lola! Well done, children!’
‘Thank you for saving me, Class 3,’ said Mrs. Henderson. ‘You are definitely my best and bravest class, you even saved me from being turned into fish and chips! I’m going to New Zealand now, but I’ll always remember you and if I ever need your help I will send Lola the Wonder Dog!’
‘Three cheers for Class 3,’ said Mrs. Henderson.
‘Hip hip – HOORAY!’
‘Hip hip – HOORAY!’
‘Hip hip – HOORAY!’
And they all lived happily ever after.
