Once upon a time there was a boy called Sebastian.
He lived in his house with his Mum and his Dad and his big sister Sasha.
One special morning Sebastian woke up very early. He was excited because it was his birthday!
Mum and Dad and Sasha came into his room and sang: ‘Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Sebastian…happy birthday to you!’
There was a huge chocolate cake with candles on it.
Sebastian took a huge HUFF…
And a huge PUFF…
And he BLEW those candles right out!
‘Don’t forget to make a wish!’ said Mum.
Sebastian closed his eyes and he made his wish. ‘I wish I could have a ride in a fire engine on my birthday!’
When Sebastian opened his eyes, he heard a sound.
‘MIAOW!’
Was it Mum? No.
‘MIAOW!’
Was it Dad? No!
‘MIAOW!’
Was it Sasha? NO!
Sebastian looked out the window. A cat was stuck up the tree!
‘Oh no, what can we do?’ said Dad.
‘We’ll have to call the fire brigade,’ said Sasha.
Mum called the fire brigade and very soon Sebastian could hear the best noise in the whole world…
NEE-NAW NEE-NAW NEE-NAW!
The fire engine parked outside Sebastian’s house. It was big and shiny and red with huge black wheels and huge blue lights and a huge siren going NEE-NAW NEE-NAW NEE-NAW!
The firemen quickly got out and fetched their ladder. Sebastian watched as they climbed up and picked the cat out of the tree.
The cat was very happy. It went…‘MIAOW!’
The firemen were very impressed by how clever Sebastian was to see the cat and get help. They said he could ride in their fire engine for the day.
Mum and Dad said it was okay, so Sebastian climbed into the fire engine.
The firemen gave him his own bright yellow fire helmet and a special seat right in the front of the fire engine.
Suddenly the radio said, ‘Emergency! Emergency! There’s a fire at the old house on the hill!’
‘Quick, Sebastian, turn on the siren!’ said the firemen.
Sebastian turned on the siren.
NEE-NAW NEE-NAW NEE-NAW!
The fire engine raced through the town to the house on the hill.
The firemen got the hose ready to spray water on the fire.
‘Turn on the tap, Sebastian!’ said the firemen.
Sebastian turned on the tap.
The hose went…
FFFP. FFFP. FFFP.
What happened? There wasn’t any water!
‘No water!’ said the firemen. ‘What are we going to do?’
‘I know,’ said Sebastian. ‘Let’s get water from the river. I’ll show you the way!’
So they got back in the fire engine and turned on the siren.
NEE-NAW NEE-NAW NEE-NAW!
The fire engine raced through the town to the river.
The firemen put the hose in the river.
The hose sucked up plenty of water.
GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG GLUG!
Then they went back to the house on the hill.
The firemen got the hose ready to spray water on the fire.
‘Turn on the tap, Sebastian!’ said the firemen.
Sebastian turned on the tap.
And the hose went…
SPLOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSH
all over the fire – and it put the fire right out!
‘Hooray!’ said the firemen. They went back home with the fire engine.
‘Would you like to stay for tea?’ asked Mum.
‘Yes please!’ said the firemen.
So Sebastian and his Mum and Dad, and his big sister Sasha, and the firemen, and even the cat, all stayed for an extra special birthday tea. Dad started bringing all the food and drink out of the kitchen for them to eat.
But there was a problem.
‘Oh no,’ said Dad. ‘There’s no water in the kettle, and the firemen want a cup of tea!’
‘Don’t worry,’ said Sebastian.
Sebastian went to the fire engine.
He got the hose.
He turned on the tap.
The hose went…
SPLOOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSH
until the kettle was full.
‘Hooray for Sebastian!’ everybody cheered.
The cat said, ‘Miaow!’
And that is the story of how Sebastian got his birthday wish.
