Hello, my name is Catherine Jones. I live in a catholic childrens home in the center of London. It's 1939 and Nevil Chamberlin is our prime minister. Most people say that you can't remember being a baby. Well I can, sort of. I was One when my mother left me on the doorstep of the childrens home. I had a tag around my neck saying, "Baby Jones, 20th October 1928." I know this, because the nuns at the home gave it to me on my 9th birthday. I have some special disorder where I start talking about one thing, and then suddenly another.
"Girls!" Sister Alison calls, "Dinner time!" Sister Alison is the nicest of them all. Yet she rings a bell and it is so loud that even after she stops, I still have a faint ringing noise in my head. I love dinner at the home, it isnt the nicest food, but the way that everyone sits around the table makes me feel like I'm loved, in a way that a mother loves her child.
We sit around the table, and my friend Annie sits next to me, and we talk about what we heard on the radio last week. A man called Adolf Hitler has invaded Poland. He is trying to take over the world. Our prime minister, Neville Chamberlin, has declared war on him and his country which is Germany.
