Insomnia

I feel like a part of me is broken.
Perhaps beyond repair.
Dusk betrayed me and plunged
My world into darkness.
The moon, crooked with age,
cackles. He knows he owns me.
The clock's hands have frozen
I fear I may be trapped in this
night fortress for ever. Never
to see the sun rise again.
I skulk in corners.
Chase the moon shadows across
the cold floor boards.
Have you ever felt so alone?
I punch your number into the phone.
With each ring my chest tightens.
But you answer.
As you always do. Life line.
You speak softly, words of comfort
I suppose. But I don't hear them.
Only the tone of your voice, rising
and falling like the ocean tides.
And your breathing. Steady. Rhythmic.
Remember your strong arms around me.
When I was afraid of the dark.
You are really thousands of miles from here.
But still it's like you're lying
next to me. Just talking.
Finally the first chirps of dawn chorus
can be heard amongst the trees.
And my broken pieces begin to
work again.
