AMONG THE TREES

in forests, they're in aggregate  
their neighbors close at hand  
all colors and varieties  
enriching fertile land

 

their limbs are waving, joyfully  
saluting those nearby  
their fingers stretch to grab the wind  
and wrest it from the sky

 

their leaves are like a lover's hands  
that whisper as they touch  
the crisper that the weather grows  
the deeper they will clutch

 

deep down below, there's many roots  
that mesh beneath the soil  
resplendent in their unity  
as gracefully, they coil

 

their roots are plunging into earth  
entwining underground  
and finding secret histories  
of others they have found

 

their roots are like a lover's heart  
which soothes them, though unseen  
and keeps the lifeblood pumping  
in those trees of ever green
