THE AWFUL TRUTH

they say a lump of sugar
makes the medicine go down
but i would rather take my lumps
then in my sorrow, drown
.
for when it's time for answers
it is safe to say that i
would want the awful truth
and not a reassuring lie
.
some people swear to tell the truth
they swear it on their grave
but maybe it's your feelings
not their lives, they want to save
.
be cautious when a person says
i cross my heart or die
they'll skip the awful truth
and tell a reassuring lie
.
straightforwardness, the method
that one really ought to use
for if one speaks in riddles
it will only just confuse
.
so keep your silly games
for i have other fish to fry
i want the awful truth
and not a reassuring lie

This is brilliant. I think many (including me) are guilty of burying our heads in the sand and preferring to hear what we want to rather than facing up to things. This is a great reminder.
