FRIEND OR FOE ?

water's an elixir

its denial would bring death

but fluid in your lungs could kill

by robbing us of breath

.

as embryos. we float along

in seas within a womb

is water there to cleanse ourselves

or dampness in our tomb ?

.

wind is there to fan us

so our bodies can stay cool

but gusts when they accelerate

become a lethal tool

.

the breeze may sometimes whistle

other times, their songs bring gloom

is wind the whispered word of love

or muttered threats of doom ?

.

fire can be our partner

and our lives, it may enhance

but pyres that grow beyond control

become a deadly dance

.

the licking flames demand respect

we mustn't just presume

is fire a friend to keep us warm

or foe that will consume ?

.

earth is where we're given life

and when that life is through

we find ourselves reclaimed by soil

recycling anew

.

although a fierce protector

when the eerie shadows loom

is earth the hell that we deserve

or heaven's waiting room ?
