HOME STRETCH

the man lived in a little house
embedded in the woods
he did not have a multitude
of any earthly goods

each night he bent his head in prayer
"dear lord, just so you know
the only thing i ask of you
is that my house may grow"

" i feel so claustrophobic
in my humble small abode
if i don't get some elbow room
i'm liable to explode"

for years he said this little prayer
and thought it'd be a cinch
but every day when he awoke
it had not grown an inch

but one day to his wonder
he could not believe his eyes
the house he'd lived in for so long
had doubled in it's size

he jumped to rise but what a shock
this poor man had in store
his bed had also grown
and his feet dangled from the floor

his table and his sofa
all his clothes and favorite cup
his plates and forks and spoons and knives
had also doubled up

the next day things quadrupled
and he thought his mind would pop
that night when saying prayers
he said, "oh lord, please make this stop"

but the next day things were bigger
and the next day even more
the bed was so immense
he could not even reach the floor

and further it continued
till his home became so vast
that every shred of normalcy
was buried in the past

then one day there was knocking
at his hundred foot front door
a giant slowly entered
and his footsteps shook the floor

he'd come to see his neighbor
cause for days he'd not been heard
and he had wandered over
just to see what had occurred

he didn't see his buddy
when upon the bed he sat
and never heard his protest
when his bottom smashed him flat

this man had learned a lesson
best beware of what you wished
not only may your dreams be squashed
you also may be squished
