I HOLD MY HAND

my fingers are so restless
they are anxious and adrift
they miss the digits of your hand
where once they'd always shift
.
although a distant memory
the thought of you endures
i sit and hold my hand at night
pretending that it's yours
.
completion of a circuit
the communion of a prayer
but now my lonely fingers
are just grasping at thin air
.
the passing of the months
will heal a bit but never cures
i sit and hold my hand at night
pretending that it's yours
.
intact we were an echo
how we would reverberate
our fingers so electric
that blue sparks would emanate
.
now ripples in the water
are a wave that barely stirs
i sit and hold my hand at night
pretending that it's yours
.
back then we were a couple
now uncoupled due to fate
our fingers curled together
now they're only stretched out straight
.
my grip a useless monogram
instead of him and hers
i sit and hold my hand at night
pretending that it's yours

This is so sad, alvin, and yet couldn't help half-smiling at the end;-)
