you find someone to love
their name is lovely as can be
it's written in gold letters
on a fifty foot marquee

but when things get familiar
though you love them just the same
it seems you often treat them
like they haven't got a name

you speak to them directly
and although you hold them close
their name has lost all meaning
you have gotten less verbose

the name, once so repeated
has an impact less precise
it almost seems to you
a trite unpopular device

perhaps she's doing likewise
maybe noticed, maybe not
but clearly, to the table
there's a closeness never brought

it only takes a second
to unveil their name once more
a chance to let them know
they're not a person you ignore

and if you cannot do this
you have just yourself to blame
so instead of being silent
take the time to say their name
