i watched some gumby late last night
i'd missed it quite a while
it was a favorite as a child
it always made me smile
.
but now that i am older
though i dig it just the same
i find i view it differently
and this is what's to blame
.
last night, i pondered all the work
that caused the magic tricks
manipulation of the clay
a thousand camera clicks
.
but when i was a little boy
i thought that he was real
and filming his tomfoolery
was really no big deal
.
he had offbeat adventures
into books, he'd jump with glee
surreal and psychedelic
unknown terms to younger me
.
it was such a flight of fancy
what a wonderful escape
to watch his limber body
change to every size and shape
.
i guess one shouldn't question
how the final product's made
just let your mind go rubber
and enjoy the grand parade

It sounds like 'Morph' that
It sounds like 'Morph' that Tony Hart did from shaping plasticene - forerunners of Wallace and Gromit? What you say pictures so much of the better kids stuff, where the adults can watch/read enjoying at the same level as the children but also at an extra level, either as you talk of the how-it's-done, or just some more subtle good humour they can pick up.
