shakespeare had a desk
and on his desk, he'd placed a skull
he'd write his wondrous plays
and on mortality, he'd mull
.
he'd gaze upon that skull
and knew that one day he'd be dead
but if his works were good enough
his words would still be read
.
i guess that every writer
is quite similar in thought
if words survive the author
immortality is bought
.
so limited the time
that we are given to exist
will our writings be discarded
like last monday's grocery list ?
.
i have a little desk
it's nothing fancy, rather dull
and sadly i'm admitting
that i don't possess a skull
.
unless you want to count
the one embedded in my head
the brain inside that skull
providing poems until i'm dead
.
i'll never be a shakespeare
and i wasn't meant to be
but i will rack my skull
until it is the death of me

I think you're right Alvin, all poets have a little bit of Shakespeare in their head.
Your poetry always amazes me and you always seem to come up with more ideas.
Thank you for sharing this piece - it was inspiring.
Jenny.
