TRAFFIC LIGHT ELVES

while sitting at a traffic light
a little girl of five
asked her mom, behind the wheel
when she could learn to drive
.
her mother said, "you have a while
till you have reached that stage
but as for education
you may start at any age"
.
"if you observe that signal
when a red light's at the top
you put your foot upon the brake
and push down till you stop"
.
"when the red light disappears
a new green light will glow
it's way down at the bottom
and when safe, it's time to go"
.
"when that green light disappears
a yellow light will flick
you have to either stop or go
and have to figure quick"
.
"but mommy, who controls those lights ?
do they control themselves ?"
"no, my dear, up in those holes
are hidden little elves
.
"they're holding little apples
in their jackets, they will stow
and wait beside their little hole
till it is time to show"
.
"then they pull out their apples
and these apples start to glow
first red, then green, then yellow
and it helps the traffic flow"
.
"but angering these little elves
is really not too smart
those drivers, misbehaving
will upset the apple cart"
