WHAT MAIMS US

life may throw some jagged shards
of glass that cut us deep
and seeping into these cruel wounds
a poison may just creep

we fight back with a fury
with an fire to stay alive
and rising is the power
that compels us to survive

but from a bad experience
there is a lesson taught
and every time we're made to fall
a drop of wisdom's caught

what maims us also molds us
we recover from the rift
although the cost is high sometimes
it's such a priceless gift

it's said what doesn't kill us
makes us stronger by and by
much clearer is the truth
when we're confronted with a lie

when dark looms to surround us
often light comes shining though
the brilliance, overwhelming
makes it clear what we must do

we all need education
and although it seems quite sad
we learn much more from sorrow
than the times when we are glad

what maims us also molds us
and it carries us on high
the cost we pay is dear
but this is how we learn to fly
