WHY THE HEART ?

how come when love comes visiting
we pin it on the heart ?
why does this certain organ
always play the leading part ?
.
our hearts sustain our life
but does it rule our loving, too ?
or is it just a pump
that lets our blood go surging through ?
.
it's said, love gives you butterflies
you feel them in your guts
but tummies on a valentine ?
they'd think that you were nuts
.
they say that bellies, masculine
lead right into their hearts
but when love disappears
is that the way that it departs ?
.
some say, "i cannot stomach you"
this means you make them sick
but would they say, "i stomach you"
when lovers, they may pick ?
.
some also say, "i hate your guts"
but is it apropos
to tell someone, "i love your guts"
when feelings start to grow ?
.
well, i'm unclear about these things
but one thing sure is plain
the last thing that's involved with love
has got to be one's brain
.
but i love you so totally
that i can tell you true
i love your guts with all my heart
and your gray matter, too

Love this poem Alvin, can you imagine Valentine cards with tummies on? pretty weird that would be I think, just doesn't have the same affect as a heart. Or even cupid shooting an arrow at a belly. I loved the end of this poem too, kind of makes a great poem for an older couple. Keep on truckin Alvin. Jenny.
