A flotilla of girls passes,
Swathed in knitwear and denim.
Earrings swing like conkers on strings,
Behind waves of unbound hair.
I turn in their wake,
Abruptly aware of the chill,
The sun's struggle to pierce the smoky sky
And light up, for one more day
These girls of summer, moving to autumn's hues.
