She walked down the hall as fast as she could so no one could see her become distraught. She’d given them ten years of her life, and they rewarded her with a “thank you very much, but your services are no longer required.”
She reached her desk behind the wall of her cubicle that was her work home for these last years. She picked up some pictures and a few mementos and tossed them into her big satchel that she carried with her always. Larry, the heavy set guard came into her line of sight as he waited to escort her out. His usual jovial smile replaced with a scowl that said “you don’t work here anymore.” She collected her personal stuff, and hurried towards the elevator. The dam was cracking and she was going to become hysterical, but she didn’t dare do it here. She wouldn’t give them the satisfaction. None of her “friends” came to say goodbye, in fact, they made a point of avoiding eye contact with her at all costs. How dare they treat her like that she stomped out of the office, the smoked glass door swinging silently, finally closed, and into the elevator bank with it’s brown marble walls and overbearing florescent lighting. Stabbing the button on the elevator over and over with Larry the heavy set guard standing next to her guarding the company from her. “budget cuts” she just kept saying it over and over again in her head “bullshit” she kept saying over and over in her head. She sniffled hard, no damnit I won’t cry in front of them, I won’t let them see me upset. She slammed her finger into the elevator button again where the hell is it? Her husband had always wanted her to quit her job, stay home and take care of the house. It wasn’t like she needed to work, she just really liked having a place that was separate from Jim and I. the bell for the elevator sounded and the red down arrow glowed above as the doors swung open. “I can take a vacation, go see my parents again,” she thought to herself as she stepped into the empty shaft, and fell into the darkness.
