Andrew's Ideas

Andrew suggested
that i write
about driving lessons.
but i thought of Horace's advice
'if you want to move me to tears
you must first feel grief yourself'
and i realised i couldn't write about driving...
because i don't even know how to drive
even though i'm 22...
it's actually quite embarrassing.
And he suggested
that i write
about people who are never on time.
and i thought of one particular person
who is usually punctual
but ever since i fell in love with him
he always seems to keep me waiting
but always has a good excuse.
and i can never stay angry at him.
actually i can never even tell him
that i was angry in the first place.
And he suggested
that i write
about breaking something
and trying to disguise it.
and i instantly remembered
being nine
breaking a plate
and in fear of my mother's reprimands-
hiding the pieces in my cupboard.
the fact that they were covered in crumbs,
and bits of melted cheese
didn't hinder me.
of course my mother eventually found out
and was more angry at me
for hiding it
then for actually breaking it in the first place.
And he suggested
that i write about someone
telling you something
you know is a lie.
and the only thing i could think of
was Sheryl Crow singing
"lie to me
i promise i'll believe"
and the thought depressed me?
so i decided to write a poem
about photography instead...
