The Freeway (for my Brother)

The dreamtime freeway
Flat snakes across the
Bounty of New Jersey
From the sleepy hollow of
Where you live
To the cartoon canyons and
Celluloid streets of the city
You visit for dinner
Or art, the city hall that
Saw you married
To the all American
Girl, who looked
Like Grace Kelly on
Your wedding day.
Roadkill punctuates
The transition from
Farm land and stone rivers
Where you live
To the gathering of
All thought, all industry.
A sudden collapse in the tarmac
Jolts us momentarily
Forward from the frosted leather
Of this expeditious ride
Toward sidewalks flushed with life
Sharp with the charisma of late spring.
Near where you live we
Skirt the lake on borrowed bikes
The heron looms strait backed
From the water's edge
Trees flirt their blossom to a breeze
That carries the soft hum of
Distant lawn mowers.
I follow the road
Twisting off and away
Around the blind bend.
