With thanks to the Morphine
Writing poetry is not an easy thing
Reading it can be even more challenging
I sit down with pen in hand
Trying to think of rhymes not too bland
The muse is elusive to me
But eventually the words come profusely
And with thanks to the morphine
My strife remains unseen
But Morpheus the God of Dreams
Has led to many a successful scheme
It worked for Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Whose poems often left me frowning
Heinrich Heine spoke of death’s brother sleep
In his poem ‘Morphine’, which is quite deep
My friend Freud was more into cocaine
Although some do call his work innane
Whether its working for me I don’t know
But for now I’ll just go and go and go
