Down among the weeds

I’m down among the weeds and discarded trolleys, pushing through the bicycles, old tyres and prams. Digging in the mud for the remnants of hope.
The river has been poisoned. Too many years discharging effluent without a thought have rendered these waters too corrosive for life.
Across the county, beside the Rother and the Don, we see the lesson of the past:
Beauty takes its place behind the arc of the scythe.

I might be wrong but
I thought the Don was pretty clean now. I remember passing over in on the A1 many times back in the 70's and it was tar black, but last time I saw it, about two years ago, it looked like a different river.
Not sure about what happened to the Rother
