One for the road

How’s it going, boys?
How’s oblivion?
Is it all they say it is?
Or just a long dark night?
Three empty garden seats crowd in
The wind speaks for them
I’ve trimmed the hedges
Mown the lawn
Tidied up the photographs and
cleared the drawers
Filled the house with stories
Had a laugh or two, remembering
The smell of watered grass hangs like
incense
A branch taps messages against the fence
You’ve each mown this lawn
Trimmed these hedges
Watched the same clouds drag
across a darkening sky
So how's it going?
Enjoy this smoke, boys
Drink with me tonight
We’ll see each other soon enough
