City of yore a Saxon burgh,
A Roman town, a Celtic village,
Where flourished trade, where flourished learning,
Free from fear of sack and pillage.
Uptown. 2 Downs. Downing Street.
Plagued by Fire, logged by Pepys.
History told in nursery rhymes.
Ancient buildings, Modern Times-
Twenties, flappers at the Ritz.
Forties London, scene of Blitz.
Sordid Soho, Bohemia then,
When Change Winds blew peals from Big Ben
That rang the knell for Empire’s glory,
And Fleet Street there to print the story.
Sixties London in full swing.
The Seventies sagged. We did our thing.
The eighties lingered for a while
As fashion went in search of style,
Fortune favoured the Golden Mile,
And all seemed upwardly mobile…
