"Flaming heck," said Xarnoth the dragon, as the asteroid came hurtling towards him. He ran into a cave and transfered his essence onto a bit of rock. Everything disintegrated around him.

Five million years later, he found himself in a schoolboy's lunchbox. Not a very dignified place for an awakening, but beggars can't be choosers.
"Is it a fossil?" said the schoolboy's friend (who Xarnoth intuited was called 'Ashley').
"It looks like a drawing," said the schoolboy (who Xarnoth intuited was called 'Dan').
"On a rock?"
"On a rock."
"Not a fossil then."
"Nope."
Ashley licked his finger and rubbed at the 'drawing' - "It's not coming off," he said.
"What did you expect?" said Dan.
Bugger this, thought Xarnoth... and with a sucking-ripping-Velcro-ish sound, he extracted himself from the rock, fluttered up to Ashley's face and spewed a gout of flame at his left eyebrow.
***
"Aaahh!" said Ashley, as the tiny hellbeast flew off at speed.
